Fire Stopping & Compartmentation
Compartmentation & Fire stopping is a fire protection system made of various components used to seal openings and joints in fire-resistance rated walls and/or floor assemblies to prevent the spread of fire & if there is a stay put policy. With any stay put policy, the area you are in, be it a flat or communal room, has to be safe and protect you.
Fire stopping is designed to restore the fire-resistance ratings of walls and/or floor assemblies by impeding the spread of fire by filling the openings with fire-resistant materials, this is generally where pipes or cables have been installed after the original build.
Unprotected openings in fire compartmentation walls or separations above fire doors, cancel out the fire-resistance ratings of the fire separations, allowing the spread of fire, usually past the limits of the fire safety plan of a building.
Materials
Fire stopping components include Intumescent Pastes & Sealants, cementitious mortars, Intumescent & Acoustic silicone, fire stopping pillows, Inert Mineral Wool, and rubber compounds.
