Fire Stopping & Compartmentation
Compartmentation and Fire Stopping is a fire protection system which is made of various different components used to seal openings and joints to prevent the spread of a fire. This means that the area you are in is safe and can protect you. Fire Stopping is created to restore the fire-resistance ratings of wall and floor assemblies by impeding the spread of fire by filling the openings with fire-resistant materials.
So, what are fire stopping components made of? Well, they are made up of intumescent pastes and sealants, cementitious mortars, silicone, fire stopping pillows, mineral fibres and rubber compounds.
How is Fire stopping maintained? Fire Stopping should be maintained according to the listings approval use. As a business owner, you can meet the required guidelines (RRFSO 2005) using your construction documentation. This document sometimes includes an inventory of all fire stopping within your building with drawings to help you locate each fire stopping.
